Top 10 Family Attractions in Budapest

1. Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden

The Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden is not only a place where you can see animals from Hungary and from far away, but also a place for education and entertainment. The garden has been a protected area since 1986. The Zoo is home to numerous strictly protected plant and animal species. Beside this, the protection of the biodiversity of the Carpathian basin is fundamental to its mission. Several hundred mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and water creatures live here.

2. Palace of Miracles exhibiton

This is an interactive scientific exhibition and education centre. Primarily it teaches children, showing them the rules of the natural sciences. It is a fusion of didactic approaches particular to a museum, a school, a playground or amusement park, and a cultural centre.

3. Amusement Park

A wide variety of modern and traditional amusements are in store for visitors at the Amusement Park including the longest wooden frame roller coaster in Europe. The present Amusement Park covers a 6.5-hectare area and has 50 different rides, five of which are listed heritage. Among the traditional rides are the Merry-Go-Round (Körhinta), built in 1906 and restored to its original splendour, and the longest wooden frame Roller Coaster (Hullámvasút) in Europe, used continuously since 1922. One of the most popular modern rides is the Looping Star, a roller coaster from Scotland, which loops the loop. The interactive goal scoring game, Goal King (Gólkirály), and the Laser Dodgem (Lézerdodzsem) are the biggest ones of their kind in the world and are unique in Europe.

4. City Park

The 100 hectare City Park is one of the largest parks in Budapest. There is something for all age groups to do in this recreation area with its Amusement Park (Vidámpark), Zoo (Fővárosi Állatkert), Cirkus (Fővárosi Nagycirkusz), museums, thermal baths, rowing lake and City Park Ice Rink (Városligeti Jégpálya).

5. Grand Circus of the Capital

Central Europe's one and only permanent circus building hosts not only circus performances, but also concerts, fashion shows, and sports events, as well as theatre, operette, and dance performances.

6. Railway Museum

The Railway Museum is one of Europe's largest open-air railway museums and also the first interactive railway park on the continent. Most engines of by-gone days are still in working order and thus admiration can even become a 'hands-on' experience.

7. Tropicarium – Oceanarium

Fish of Hungarian waters, just as well as creatures living in tropical rainforests, in the depths of the world's seas and oceans are on show here. They are housed in environments that very closely resemble their original ones.

8. Bob Run

Beside the bob track, a minigolf court, a cloud-cuckoo-land, two mock-grassed soccer fields, a bufet and a free-to-use, secure playground - suiting the European standard - offers a great leisure time.

9. Children’s Railway

The speciality of this 11 kilometre-long, 760 millimetre small-gauge 'little train' is that children between 10-14 years provide most services: they check the tickets, signal out and even conduct trains. The Children's Railway was built between 1948 and 1950 connecting Hűvösvölgy (Cool Valley) and Széchenyi Hill. At that time and indeed until 1990, it bore the name Pioneers' Railway (Úttörővasút). The Pioneers ('úttörő') was the only children's organisation in the Socialist Era, following the example of the Russian 'pioneers'.

10. Széchenyi Bath

The Széchenyi is one of the biggest bathing complexes anywhere in Europe, whose hot spring – both the city’s hottest and deepest – was discovered in 1879. The neo-baroque building containing the thermal baths dates from 1913 and the adjacent swimming pool opened in 1927. The water is so warm that the outdoor pools are popular with bathers even in the depths of winter!
